Passing of Sri K. Pattabhi JoisFor those that were not aware, the founder of modern Ashtanga yoga, passed away after a brief illness on 18 May 2009. He was 93.
Pattabhi Jois (on right of image) pictured with BK Iyengar Pattabhi Jois, known affectionately as Gurujii by many, meaning ‘honored guru’ was an inspiration and leader to millions of yoga followers worldwide. He was one of the most well known and influential yoga masters in the world and, along with BK Iyengar, was instrumental in helping expand yoga in the West. Jois was a student of T. Krishnamacharya (who, as it happens, also taught his contemporary BK Iyengar) for 25 years. Jois consistently and constantly emphasized the importance of repetition and regularity with yoga practice. He stressed the importance of linking breath to each movement and in linking each asana to the next through vinyasa (breath-synchronized movement). He believed that with physical practice came understanding. That is, ‘train the body and the body will train the mind.’ Jois is not only credited for popularizing his own style of yoga - Ashtanga yoga – but also more generally was responsible for popularizing the breath and vinyasa-based form of yoga so often seen in yoga classes around the world today (including many classes in our own Centre). His legacy has not only influenced and inspired many thousands of yoga teachers and perhaps millions of yoga students world-wide, but also inspired many new types of yoga-based exercise ranging from ‘Body Balance’ to Pilates. His work will continue to live on in the millions of people he has directly and indirectly touched.
